NSW Police commissioner Andrew Scipione says he is still haunted by the stabbing death of a veteran police officer in Sydney last year.

Detective Inspector Bryson Anderson, a 45-year-old father of three, died after he was fatally stabbed while trying to calm a neighbourhood dispute over a bird cage in Oakville, in Sydney's northwest, on December 6.

"This brings it all flooding back," Commissioner Scipione told the National Police Remembrance Day ceremony at The Domain on Friday.

"And for these people, it's something that will never end."

He said helping Det Insp Anderson's youngest son Cain, 10, lay a wreath for his father at the Wall of Remembrance was an emotional experience.

"I'm sure I had a lump in my throat the size of a watermelon."

The commissioner said he remembered being at the hospital with Det Insp Anderson's widow, daughter and two sons.

"Olivia had just lost her dad ... and yet the first thing she asked me was if there were other police there with him.

"I told her there were, and she started to cry and said, 'I feel so sad for them'.

"Even in their tragedy, they still think about others."

Since 1862 when the force was set up, a total of 252 NSW police have lost their lives in pursuit of their duty.

Mr Scipione said it was important to acknowledge the risks involved in police work.

"They start their shifts never knowing when it will end," he said.

"Today is a sad day for many, but it's important because we will always remember those who have fallen.

"We have come together as a big family."

A national service is also being held on Friday at the National Police Memorial in Canberra.
